About Listening

Our intention at Listening, The Barre Integrated Health Center, is to increase the well-being of the community by promoting access to healthcare and encouraging self-education. Located in a large, beautiful historic house adjacent to Barre Common, we offer the services of a group of skilled and experienced healers from a variety of complementary and allopathic medicines. Our intention is to be partner/guide with our clients, working with them to explore what works for their unique situation and what will help them to enhance their enjoyment of lie at all levels--physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The close proximity of many healers allows easy referrals and the ability to plan a course of treatments that best suits the individual.

At the heart of the healing work of each practitioner is the intention to listen and to encourage the art of listening. To listen means to stop, even in the midst of our busy lives, and to be alertly aware. We can all listen to each other, to nature, and most of all to ourselves. It is at this place of listening, with awareness to our own inner voice of wisdom, that healing and transformation take place.

Listening is a community center, open to all, not just those needing individual appointments. We offer a library, bookstore, cafe, and workshops and classes. Our intention is to foster community through learning and exploration.

Listening, The Barre Integrated Health Center, is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide ease of access to complementary care and to provide community education on health and self-care. We accept tax-deductible donations and grants for this mission.

Our Logo

We chose the gingko leaf as our logo because it is the oldest living plant species.  It has both male and female parts in one plant and is used by both western and eastern cultures as a healing herb.  It is used to promote clarity and awareness.  Therefore, we found the leaf of this extraordinary but ordinary leaf to be the perfect logo for our Center.

The form of the leaf on the front of the brochure is very joyous with the stem aimed at the earth and the veins of the leaf reaching heavenward.  It is both peaceful and alert, just the right listening pose.

 History of the Center

The seeds for LISTENING The Barre Integrated Health Center were planted in 1995 when Mick Huppert, Director of Community Education at UMass Medical Center, Dr. Dave Davis, Family practitioner in Hubbardston, MA, Joseph Goldstein and Sharon Salzburg, founders of Insight Meditation Society in Barre, and Dedie King, acupuncturist in Hardwick and Amherst, began meeting to discuss the idea of a complementary care health center in Central Massachusetts. Various approaches were analyzed and Mick Huppert brought in other people to do a feasibility study. After a couple years of grappling with the inherent difficulties, the project lost steam.

Not wanting to let go of her vision of a center dedicated to the idea of partnership with practitioner and client, the idea of self-care on all levels of physical, emotional and spiritual, and the concept of discovering one's own wisdom and connection with nature, Dedie kept writing and talking with people about the vision. In 1998 Dr. Bruce Lockhart moved to the area and was interested in the concept. Bruce and Dedie both wanted the Center to be located in Barre in order to be near the Insight Meditation Society.

The following spring, Bruce and Dedie reconnected with Elizabeth Coe who on her own was also interested in the idea of an integrated health center in Barre. Elizabeth's resourcefulness and organization skills were the spark that ignited the mission into reality.

The beautiful Houghton House just off the common in Barre Center was purchased in the summer of 1999. Renovations were made to include a beautiful yoga studio in the back lot, extra treatment rooms created, a ramp and accessible bathroom added, a classroom and porch added, as well as many other changes with Elizabeth acting as chief contractor. The small core of practitioners quickly swelled to 12 talented and experienced healthcare people and regular meetings began.

Listening the Barre Integrated Health Center had its opening on January 15, 2000.

We also welcome tax-deductible grants to be used for community health education. You can call the Center at (978) 355-3501.
